Postdoctoral Researcher in Development of in Vitro Skin Model Including Sensory Perception

ETH Zurich - January 24, 2026

Postdoc Position in Development of In Vitro Skin Model Including Sensory Perception

100%, Basel, fixed-term

We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic Postdoc for an exciting collaborative project between the Bio Engineering Laboratory at the Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering of ETH Zurich in Basel and Novartis AG, Basel, Switzerland. This position offers a unique opportunity to collaborate across scientific and organizational boundaries, focusing on the development of advanced skin models that study barrier function and itching, with the potential for therapeutic breakthroughs for patients.

Project Background

Utilizing cutting-edge advanced cellular models, bioengineering, and microfluidic approaches, this project aims to develop skin models that encompass sensory perception to enhance our understanding of immunological skin diseases and their applications in drug discovery. Current ex vivo skin models, while prevalent in pharmaceutical and cosmetic research, are limited in their ability to assess itch-inducing and barrier-compromising conditions in real-time. Emerging models based on primary keratinocytes and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) offer enhanced replication of physiological and disease states, necessitating adaptation for pharmaceutical research and target identification.

Job Description

  • As part of this collaborative effort, you will develop an in vitro 3D human skin model to investigate barrier function under homeostatic conditions and in response to inflammatory stimuli.
  • By integrating state-of-the-art engineering and microfluidic approaches with novel cellular models, you will create skin models that incorporate sensory perception, applicable in both fundamental science and drug testing.
  • You will engage in establishing and culturing the 3D skin models and optimizing sensor technology (e.g., TEER and TEWL) to ensure a robust assessment of skin barrier functionality.
  • The integration of iPSC-derived sensory neurons will facilitate the study of itch perception.

Profile

  • A strong background in biology and engineering (e.g., bioengineering, biotechnology, or related fields) with solid knowledge of molecular biology and cell culturing, particularly in microphysiological systems.
  • Experience in primary cell culturing, work with advanced in vitro models, epithelial/endothelial barrier characterization, and iPSC differentiation is essential; skills in optical microscopy, sensor development, integration, and electrophysiology are a plus.
  • Demonstrated academic excellence, a professional attitude, and a self-driven nature.
  • Strong communication skills, fluency in English, and a proactive mindset are crucial for thriving in this collaborative international environment.

Workplace

The position is fully funded for an initial duration of 2 years, with the possibility of extension up to 4 years. The starting date is flexible but must be before June 2026.

What We Offer

  • An impactful role: Join ETH Zurich, where your professional development is supported, while contributing to positive societal change.
