Postdoctoral Position in Vegetational and Land Use Dynamics

We invite applications for a postdoctoral position focused on studying vegetational and land use dynamics in response to climate change and technological innovations. The successful candidate will conduct their own palynological and palaeoecological research on sediment cores from Italy. You will be part of an inspiring and innovative research environment, equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure and supported by a diverse and motivated team.

Qualifications and Skills

The ideal candidate should possess:

  • A PhD in Ecology, Environmental Sciences, or Earth Sciences.
  • A strong background in numerical analysis and optical microscopy, particularly in palynology and/or plant macrofossil analysis.
  • Knowledge of Mediterranean vegetation ecology.
  • A proven track record of high-quality research (MSc and PhD level) and international publication experience.
  • The ability to collaborate effectively within a team, working alongside two PhD students.
  • Proficiency in the Italian language is an advantage.

Research Project Details

The successful candidate will join the research team of Prof. Willy Tinner within the SNF (Swiss National Science Foundation) project CIVES, which aims to assess the environmental context of past urbanization dynamics using sedimentary archives. This project, based at the Institute of Plant Sciences and the Oeschger Centre for Climate Change Research at the University of Bern, focuses on early urbanization dynamics in Greece, Italy, and Switzerland over the past 3000 years.

Salary and Employment Conditions

The gross annual salary for this position ranges from 80,000 to 105,000 CHF for 100%. Part-time employment can be negotiated but should reach a minimum of 70%. The position is available from January 1, 2026, for a duration of 12 months, with the possibility of extension by arrangement for up to 2+ years.
