Postdoctoral Fellow / Postdoctoral Fellowess

Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI) - April 26, 2026

Your Tasks

In close collaboration with a team of experts at PSI and the University of Zurich, the postdoctoral candidate, along with a PhD candidate, will work towards significantly enhancing the high-pressure capabilities of -SR at PSI. This objective will be accomplished by enabling measurements on dramatically smaller samples at considerably higher pressures using diamond anvil cells and advanced uniaxial stress apparatus. The postdoc will play a pivotal role in developing novel hydrostatic and uniaxial pressure cells and associated experimental methodologies, aiming to increase the accessible pressure range at least threefold beyond the current world records established at the Paul Scherrer Institute PSI. These innovations will unlock previously inaccessible realms of quantum matter and facilitate the exploration of emergent phenomena under extreme conditions.

As part of a dynamic team comprising principal investigators, postdocs, and PhD students, the candidate will focus on tuning and understanding unconventional quantum phenomena such as superconductivity, charge order, and magnetism across a variety of quantum materials. The goal is to identify common features within their phase diagrams and elucidate the underlying mechanisms. This research will be conducted in a highly international and interdisciplinary environment at PSI, where the candidate will gain expertise in cutting-edge experimental techniques, high-pressure instrumentation, and fundamental topics in condensed matter physics.

Your Profile

  • PhD degree in Experimental Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, or a closely related field
  • Strong expertise in quantum materials research or experience with uniaxial and/or hydrostatic pressure techniques is advantageous
  • Familiarity with -SR or other magnetic resonance techniques is a plus
  • Strong motivation to engage in an interdisciplinary project that combines instrument development with experimental and theoretical work
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English
  • Able to work effectively as part of an international research team
