Postdoctoral Fellow / Postdoctoral Fellowess

Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI) - April 14, 2026

Your Tasks

In close collaboration with a team of experts at PSI and the University of Zurich, the postdoc candidate, alongside a PhD candidate, will work towards significantly enhancing the high-pressure capabilities of -SR at PSI. This ambitious goal will be achieved by enabling measurements on significantly smaller samples at much higher pressures through the use of diamond anvil cells and advanced uniaxial stress apparatus.

The postdoc will contribute to the development of innovative hydrostatic and uniaxial pressure cells, along with associated experimental methodologies. Our aim is to increase the accessible pressure range by at least a factor of three beyond the current world records at the Paul Scherrer Institute PSI. These advancements will facilitate exploration of previously inaccessible regimes of quantum matter and empower the investigation of emergent phenomena under extreme conditions.

As part of a dynamic team consisting of principal investigators, postdocs, and PhD students, the candidate will engage in tuning and understanding unconventional quantum phenomena such as superconductivity, charge order, and magnetism across a variety of quantum materials. The objective is to identify common features in their phase diagrams and to elucidate the underlying mechanisms. This research will be conducted within a highly international and interdisciplinary environment at PSI, allowing the candidate to gain expertise in cutting-edge experimental techniques, high-pressure instrumentation, and pivotal topics in condensed-matter physics.

Your Profile

  • PhD degree in Experimental Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, or a closely related field
  • Strong expertise in quantum materials research; experience with uniaxial and/or hydrostatic pressure techniques is advantageous
  • Experience with -SR or other magnetic resonance techniques is beneficial
  • Strong motivation to work on an interdisciplinary project combining instrument development, experimental, and theoretical work
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English
  • Ability to collaborate effectively as part of an international research team
