Postdoctoral Fellow / Postdoctoral Fellowess

Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI) - April 6, 2026

Your Tasks

In close collaboration with a team of experts from PSI and the University of Zurich, the postdoctoral candidate will work alongside a PhD candidate to significantly extend the high-pressure capabilities of -SR at PSI. This will involve enabling measurements on dramatically smaller samples at significantly higher pressures, utilizing diamond anvil cells and advanced uniaxial stress apparatus.

The postdoc will contribute to the development of novel hydrostatic and uniaxial pressure cells and associated experimental methodologies, aiming to increase the accessible pressure range by at least a factor of three beyond the current world records at the Paul Scherrer Institute. These advancements will unlock previously inaccessible regimes of quantum matter and facilitate the investigation of emergent phenomena under extreme conditions.

In a dynamic team of principal investigators, postdocs, and PhD students, the candidate will explore and refine unconventional quantum phenomena such as superconductivity, charge order, and magnetism in a variety of quantum materials. The objective is to identify common features within their phase diagrams and elucidate the underlying mechanisms. This research will be conducted in a highly international and interdisciplinary environment at PSI, providing expertise in cutting-edge experimental techniques, high-pressure instrumentation, and fundamental topics in condensed-matter physics.

Your Profile

  • PhD degree in Experimental Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, or a closely related field
  • Strong expertise in quantum materials research or experience with uniaxial and/or hydrostatic pressure techniques is an advantage
  • Experience with -SR or other magnetic resonance techniques is a plus
  • Strong motivation to engage in an interdisciplinary project that combines instrument development, experimental work, and theoretical research
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English
  • Ability to work effectively within an international research team
