Postdoctoral Fellow in Fundamental Physics with Ultracold Neutrons / Postdoctoral Fellowess in Fundamental Physics with Ultracold Neutrons

Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI) - September 9, 2025

Your Tasks

You will work on the n2EDM experiment, searching for a neutron electric dipole moment, which may signal physics beyond the Standard Model. The apparatus is currently under commissioning at the ultracold neutron UCN source, providing you with the opportunity to engage with all aspects of the experiment.

Your responsibilities will include overseeing the mercury magnetometer system in all areas of operation, maintenance, and further development—both hardware and software. Additionally, you will participate in the initial data collection for the n2EDM experiment and contribute to the first analysis. Supervision of students at all levels will also be part of your role.

Your Profile

We are looking for a talented and ambitious individual who is highly motivated to contribute to this competitive project in fundamental physics, working within a well-established research team in a large international collaboration.

  • You hold a PhD degree in physics.
  • Experience in experimental fundamental physics, neutron physics, or experimental atomic, nuclear, or particle physics is considered an asset.
  • Ability to work independently is essential.
  • You are a collaborative team player.
  • Flexibility and a multitasking work attitude are important.
  • Demonstrated practical experience in experimental work, hardware setup, and data analysis; experience with lasers and optics is a plus.
  • Programming skills are required, with experience in electronic/mechanical hardware design regarded as beneficial.
  • Proficiency in English, both spoken and written, is mandatory.
  • You possess the ability to produce excellent documentation in English.
  • Knowledge of German or a willingness to learn German quickly is advantageous.
