Postdoc in Forest Dynamics Modeling

100%, Zurich, fixed-term

The Forest Resources Management Group (FORM) at ETH Zurich aims to maximize forest utilities for humanity today and in the future. Our mission centers around developing impact-oriented approaches to inventory forest resources, creating decision support systems for sustainable forest management under risk, and translating our findings into policy and practice.

Project Background

Forest dynamics models must increasingly represent climate-sensitive ecological processes while remaining computationally robust, transparent, and reproducible. The Forest Studio model is designed as a modular modeling environment that integrates ecological theory, empirical data, and modern scientific programming workflows.

This position focuses on advancing the implementation of ecological processes, such as regeneration, mortality, and natural disturbance regimes, while ensuring rigorous testing, documentation, and integration within a collaborative software development environment.

Job Description

  • Develop and implement ecological process formulations within the Forest Studio modeling framework.
  • Design modeling strategies, conduct testing and validation, and ensure reproducible workflows.
  • Coordinate development priorities and contribute to reporting and planning within the Forest Studio team.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams and contribute to international research networks.
  • Publish results in peer-reviewed journals and present at scientific conferences.
  • Co-supervise MSc, BSc, and PhD students and contribute to teaching in the Forest and Landscape Management program.
  • Support and/or lead workshops, research events, and internal group meetings.

Profile

  • PhD in forestry, forest ecology, or a related field.
  • Strong foundation in forest ecology, forest management, and forest modeling.
  • Experience developing or applying models of forest dynamics.
  • Experience working with ecological and multi-scale datasets.
  • Proficiency in scientific programming (e.g., R, Python, Rust, or similar).
  • Experience with version control and reproducible workflows (Git, Quarto, or similar).
  • Demonstrated scientific writing and publication experience.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and project management skills.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to interdisciplinary teams.
  • Excellent written and spoken English.

We Offer

  • Your job with impact: Become part of ETH Zurich, which supports your professional development while actively contributing to positive societal change.
• Numerous benefits, including public transport season tickets, car-sharing options, a wide range of sports activities offered by ASVZ, childcare services, and attractive pension plans.
  • This position has a starting term of one year, with the potential for a one-year extension based on satisfactory performance. We are seeking a longer-term commitment and aim to support a continuation of this position beyond two years, subject to satisfactory performance and funding availability.

The desired starting date is April 1st, 2026, with flexibility for the right candidate.
