Photonic Design Engineer / Photonic Design Engineeress

Lightium AG - February 22, 2026

Join Our Team as a PIC Design Engineer

Do you dream of designing the photonic engines that will power the communication and quantum systems of tomorrow? At Lightium, we are at the forefront of developing cutting-edge photonic integrated circuits (PICs) based on thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) and are excited to expand our platform with integrated III-V active devices. We are currently seeking a highly skilled PIC Design Engineer with extensive expertise in modeling and designing active photonic components to embark on this pivotal journey with us.

Position Summary

We are looking for a PIC Designer who specializes in III-V-based active components such as lasers, semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs), and photodetectors. In this role, you will steer the simulation, design, and optimization processes for these devices, develop compact models for our process design kit (PDK), and facilitate the integration of these elements into comprehensive photonic circuits. Your contributions will significantly influence the active device layer of our hybrid TFLN platform.

Key Responsibilities

  • Active Device Design: Design and optimize III-V-based layer stacks for lasers, SOAs, and photodetectors using FEM, FDTD, and semiconductor modeling tools. Simulate optical, electrical, and thermal performance to guide layer stack design, device layout, and fabrication.
  • Hybrid Integration: Collaborate on co-design initiatives between TFLN passive circuits and III-V active regions while ensuring alignment in optical mode matching, coupling strategies, and process constraints.
  • PDK Modeling: Develop compact physical and behavioral models of active devices for system-level simulations and integrate them into our PDK utilizing tools such as GDS Factory, Luceda Photonics - IPKISS, Nazca, or Synopsys.
  • Circuit Integration: Assist in circuit-level layout and simulation of PICs, incorporating both passive and active components, and contribute to co-simulation of optical and RF behavior at the circuit level.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with fabrication, characterization, and packaging teams to validate designs, support test plans, and iterate on performance improvements.
  • Technical Expertise: Keep abreast of advancements in III-V integration, hybrid bonding, and active PIC packaging, applying knowledge to continuously enhance Lightium’s platform.
  • Documentation: Maintain thorough records of device designs, simulation parameters, and integration strategies.
  • Customer & Project Support: Occasionally assist in customer designs or publicly funded R&D projects, providing technical expertise and simulation input.

What Our Ideal Candidate Brings

  • Education & Experience: A PhD in III-V design or a minimum of 3 years of relevant III-V experience, including proficiency with photonics simulation software (COMSOL or Lumerical) and band gap simulation tools (Silvaco, Photon Design, Ansys Semiconductor, etc.). Experience in the PIC industry is a significant advantage.
  • Additional Knowledge: Advanced understanding of RF high-speed components (UTC detectors) and RF simulation tools (HFSS, CST, etc.), as well as familiarity with micro-transfer printing, coupon or tether design, photonic characterization, and microfabrication.
  • Problem Solving & Proactiveness: Strong analytical capabilities with the ability to model and enhance complex multi-physics systems, along with the autonomy to identify, take ownership of, and resolve challenges.
  • Adaptability: Ability to excel in a fast-paced startup environment, demonstrating flexibility and resilience amidst change.
  • Communication Skills: A collaborative nature with the ability to clearly present technical work to diverse teams. Fluency in English is essential.

What We Offer

  • A unique opportunity to lead a cutting-edge manufacturing initiative in the rapidly growing field of photonics.
  • A collaborative and innovative work environment where your contributions will shape the future of telecommunications, datacom, and beyond.
  • A competitive compensation and benefits package, including an employee stock option plan (ESOP) that acknowledges your experience and expertise.
  • The chance to be a crucial player in an early-phase startup, joining a motivated and energetic team where you can develop and grow your professional skills at an accelerated pace.
