100%, Zurich, fixed-term
The Optical Nanomaterial Group in the Physics Department at ETH Zurich is seeking a PhD student specializing in thin film lithium niobate nanofabrication. Photonic integrated circuits offer advanced functionalities for applications such as quantum information processing and precision sensing. Thin film lithium niobate (TFLN) is an emerging photonics platform that can integrate frequency conversion, quantum light sources, and high-speed electro-optic modulation into a single device.
Within the Optical Nanomaterial Group, we focus on the nanofabrication and optical characterization of TFLN photonic circuits. Although the fabrication process is already advanced, further optimization is necessary to achieve lower optical losses, enhance component performance, and improve interfacing with optical fibers. The role will concentrate on two primary projects:
This PhD project aims to elevate the nanofabrication of TFLN photonic circuits at ETH Zurich, incorporating all processing steps required for low-loss and reliable waveguides, developing innovative components like efficient edge couplers, and exploring future integrations of new materials and processes. The PhD student will gain expertise in various fabrication techniques, including electron beam lithography, physical and chemical etching, deposition, and electron microscopy. Furthermore, the project will involve optical simulations, mask design, and optical characterization.
The ideal candidate should be highly motivated and creative, possessing a Master’s degree in physics, nanotechnology, material science, photonics, or related fields. A strong interest in working within an interdisciplinary environment that bridges quantum photonics and material science is essential. This PhD position will require substantial involvement in nanofabrication, and prior cleanroom experience is advantageous.
As a member of ETH Zurich's thriving community, you will be at the forefront of scientific innovation and collaboration.
