Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI) - May 8, 2026

Your Tasks

  • Explore the interplay of disorder, interactions, and quantum fluctuations.
  • Study quantum localization and quantum glasses, along with their various interconnections. Elucidate the intricate spatial structure and nature of order and excitations in complex quantum systems.
  • The theoretical PhD thesis will be carried out in partial collaboration with experimental groups at PSI.

Your Profile

  • Master's degree in theoretical physics.
  • Particular interest in quantum physics, condensed matter theory/quantum statistical physics, and possibly quantum information.
  • A preference for tackling technically and conceptually challenging problems.

We Offer

Our institution fosters interdisciplinary, innovative, and dynamic collaboration. You will benefit from systematic on-the-job training, along with opportunities for personal development and a strong vocational training culture. We support the optimal combination of work and family life, as well as personal interests, through our modern employment conditions and on-site infrastructure.

You will be registered as a PhD Student at the University of Zürich, with your primary workplace at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Villigen. Your PhD thesis will be supervised by Dr. Markus Müller (Senior Scientist CMT/LTC, PSI) and co-supervised by Prof. Dr. Titus Neupert (Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics, University of Zürich). You will be part of PSI's Quantum Technology Collaboration.
