100%, Zurich, fixed-term
The Plant Molecular Physiology lab at ETH Zurich is seeking a highly motivated PhD student to join our research team on a project focused on stomatal immunity and metabolism. Stomata are tiny pores on the leaf surface that regulate gas exchange and plant productivity while also serving as natural entry points for both plant and human pathogens. Although stomata respond rapidly to microbial signals by closing, the underlying metabolic mechanisms that facilitate this response remain poorly understood. This project aims to uncover how immune signaling reprograms metabolism in guard cells, leading to stomatal closure and limiting pathogen entry.
The student will investigate how microbial elicitors trigger specific metabolic adjustments in guard cells, how these changes influence ion fluxes and osmotic regulation, and how pathogens may circumvent these defenses. The project will integrate aspects of cell biology, biochemistry, plant immunity, and translational crop research.
The long-term goal is to identify metabolic control points that can be leveraged to enhance natural plant defenses and minimize pathogen entry into leafy vegetables, contributing to sustainable agriculture and improved food safety.
The working environment is dynamic and supportive, providing access to state-of-the-art facilities at ETH Zurich. The student will receive training in advanced molecular, biochemical, and imaging approaches, and will be integrated into a vibrant international plant science community. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to research with significant societal impact in sustainable agriculture and food safety.
ETH Zurich is committed to fostering an inclusive culture and promoting equality of opportunity. We value diversity and are dedicated to creating a working and learning environment where the rights and dignity of all staff and students are respected.
