PhD Student Positions in Sociology/Economics/Education (50-70%, up to 4 years) (m/f/d)

We are seeking motivated individuals to join our team as PhD candidates in the fields of economic sociology, education, and related disciplines. Under the guidance of Prof. Patrik Aspers and PD Dr. Sabine Hoidn, you will have the opportunity to write your PhD dissertation while enrolled in a doctoral program at the University of St. Gallen.

Your Tasks

You will be engaged in pioneering research within an interdisciplinary team, contributing to one or two Horizon Europe Social Science projects in Cluster 6, which focuses on key areas such as Food, Bioeconomy, Natural Resources, Agriculture, and Environment. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting rigorous academic research in economic sociology and/or the sociology of (economic) education.
  • Analyzing data related to agricultural and agroforestry markets, as well as socio-economic impacts of new digital applications.
  • Assessing and mitigating inequalities in agroforestry decision-making processes.
  • Engaging in awareness-raising initiatives, stakeholder engagement, and capacity building.
  • Co-designing and facilitating user-oriented online training activities and materials for key stakeholders.

PhD candidates are expected to contribute to project outputs including conference papers, project reports, presentations, and peer-reviewed publications. Additionally, you will assist with administrative and teaching activities and are required to work in your office in St. Gallen on a daily basis.

Your Profile

  • A Master's degree in a relevant field (e.g., sociology, economics, and/or education) to be completed by summer 2024 at the latest.
  • A strong interest in and/or documented experience in academic research in the specified areas.
  • Practical knowledge of qualitative research methods; familiarity with quantitative research methods is advantageous.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; knowledge of German is an advantage.
