The Optical Nanomaterial Group in the Physics Department at ETH Zurich is seeking a dedicated PhD student in quantum metamaterials. Optical metamaterials represent a rapidly advancing technology, evolving from academic research into applications in modern smartphones. This evolution has been driven by the high quality and precision of sub-wavelength nanostructures fabricated through advanced methods drawn from electronics and MEMS processing. While significant progress has been made in linear optics, nonlinear and quantum metamaterials necessitate the development of different materials platforms and novel nanofabrication techniques.
The PhD project will focus on developing solution-derived metal-oxides (usually barium titanate or lithium niobate), characterizing their nonlinear optical properties, and designing metasurfaces to explore polycrystalline materials as quantum light sources. Key tasks will involve:
The ideal candidate will be motivated and creative, holding a Master’s degree in physics, nanotechnology, materials science, photonics, or a related field. A strong interest in working within an interdisciplinary environment at the intersection of quantum photonics and material science is essential.
At ETH Zurich, you will benefit from a vibrant academic environment that encourages innovation and collaboration across disciplines.
