The Optical Nanomaterial Group in the Physics Department at ETH Zurich is seeking a dedicated PhD student specializing in quantum metamaterials. Optical metamaterials represent a rapidly evolving technology that has transitioned from academic inquiry to applications in contemporary smartphones. This progress is attributed to the superior quality and precision of sub-wavelength nanostructures created through the adaptation of techniques from electronics and MEMS processing. While achievements have been noted in linear optics, advances in nonlinear and quantum metamaterials necessitate the development of new materials platforms and innovative nanofabrication methods.
The PhD project will focus on developing solution-derived metal-oxides (commonly barium titanate or lithium niobate), characterizing their nonlinear optical properties, and designing metasurfaces to investigate polycrystalline materials as potential quantum light sources. Key responsibilities will include:
The ideal candidate should be highly motivated, creative, and possess a Master’s degree in physics, nanotechnology, material science, photonics, or a related field. A strong interest in interdisciplinary work at the intersection of quantum photonics and material science is essential.
