The KOF Swiss Economic Institute at ETH Zurich is the leading institute for applied research in economics in Switzerland. KOF conducts well-founded and independent research on both the Swiss and international economy, addressing structural and economic policy issues of social relevance.

Job Description

The PhD position is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF) through the project titled The Economics of Inheritance and Inter-Vivos Gifts. This project is led by Dr. Isabel Z. Martínez at ETH and Prof. Marius Brülhart at the University of Lausanne, with contributions from associated researchers Aurélien Eyquem and Enrico Rubolino.

This project will investigate topics related to inheritance flows, inter-vivos gifts, bequest motives, and taxation. You will engage in all stages of the research, from data cleaning and analysis to visualizing results and drafting a final research paper.

The position will be based at the KOF Institute at ETH Zurich. Throughout the PhD, you will be integrated into institutional activities and participate in regular team meetings. You will collaborate closely with project leaders and team members, aiming to produce high-quality research that contributes to academic publications. The position is intended for a duration of 4 years, with an optimal starting date of September 2026.

Profile

We are looking for an ideal candidate who:

  • Is excited about research that aims to solve real-world problems. You have completed your degree with excellent grades and possess the potential to conduct high-quality research with meticulous attention to detail, aspiring to create a positive impact through your work.
  • Excels at quantitative reasoning. You have rigorous training in statistics and causal inference, along with a strong command of Stata. You understand the capabilities and limitations of data and have demonstrated interest in applied econometrics.
  • Holds a Master’s degree in Economics. You have a keen interest in public economics, inequality, taxation, and labor economics, which aligns with the focus of the project.
  • Possesses excellent verbal, written, and visual communication skills. You enjoy collaborating with others, have a compelling writing style in English, and effectively use visualizations to convey statistical insights. While knowledge of German and/or French is not mandatory, it would be advantageous.
