PhD Student / PhD Student

Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI) - May 20, 2025

Your Tasks
  • You will plan and conduct an experimental research program to assess cements at the nano and microscale, focusing on pore networks, interfacial microstructures, and moisture transport in cementitious materials. This research aims to enhance the durability and sustainability of cements.
  • You will collaborate with large-scale facilities utilizing synchrotron and/or neutron-based techniques to develop innovative experimental approaches that address key scientific questions in the study of cements as complex, porous, nanostructured materials.
  • You will actively participate in a joint experimental-modelling research program focused on the materials science and fundamental mechanisms of adhesion in cements, working closely with colleagues within and beyond PSI.
  • You will publish your findings in high-impact journals, present your research at conferences and workshops, and write a PhD thesis to conclude your doctoral studies.

Your Profile

We are seeking an enthusiastic and collaborative researcher with a strong laboratory focus and experience in materials science, particularly in the innovative characterization of porous materials. While experience with cementitious materials is advantageous, we welcome researchers with a broader background who are eager to develop new skills in this area.

The ideal candidate will possess a solid understanding of experimental material characterization and a commitment to collaborative teamwork, contributing intellectual insights within a multidisciplinary team. A Master's degree in Natural Sciences, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Civil Engineering Materials, Geochemistry, or a closely related field is required. Proficiency in English is essential, and the ability to communicate in German is a plus.

We Offer

Our institution fosters interdisciplinary, innovative, and dynamic collaboration. You will benefit from systematic on-the-job training, personal development opportunities, and a strong vocational training culture. We support a balance between work and family life or personal interests, with modern employment conditions and comprehensive on-site infrastructure.

This is a Fixed-Term position with a four-year term, contingent upon satisfactory progress in the doctoral program.
