PhD Position in Palaeoecological Research

The University of Bern is inviting applications for an accomplished PhD candidate in the field of Ecology, Environmental Sciences, Geography, Climate Sciences, Earth Sciences, or Quaternary Sciences, with a specialization in sedimentary palaeo sciences and/or vegetation ecology.

Position Overview

This position involves labor-intensive microscopic and laboratory analyses, including the study of pollen, macrofossils, and ancient DNA (aDNA). Additionally, the role entails 2-3 months of fieldwork in Mediterranean environments, focusing on core and data collection. Proficiency in the Greek and/or Italian language is advantageous.

The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Graduate School of Climate Sciences, with the PhD awarded by the Faculty of Natural Sciences at the University of Bern.

Details

  • Start Date: 1 January 2026
  • Salary: The annual gross salary ranges from 47,000 to 55,000 CHF, depending on the duration of employment and follows Swiss standards for doctoral students.
  • Duration: The maximum duration of the position is four years.
