The KOF Swiss Economic Institute at ETH Zurich, Switzerland's leading institute for applied economic research, is seeking a PhD Student in Macroeconomic Forecasting and Data Science. This position is available immediately and we are eager to fill it as soon as possible.
The Research Division of Macroeconomic Forecasting and Data Science analyzes and forecasts both the Swiss and international economy, producing KOF's short- and medium-term macroeconomic outlooks. The division integrates macroeconometric modeling with data science techniques for nowcasting, the construction of high-frequency indicators, machine learning, and time series econometrics, while maintaining the necessary data and tools for the regular KOF macroeconomic forecasts.
Job Description
- Participate in the preparation of the international economic outlook as part of the quarterly publication of KOF economic forecasts.
- Pursue an excellent PhD dissertation in applied macroeconomics, macroeconometrics, or economic nowcasting and forecasting.
- Develop, implement, and evaluate new forecasting and nowcasting models using econometric and machine learning methods.
- Analyze large-scale macroeconomic and high-frequency datasets to improve economic forecasting.
- Develop and maintain reproducible code, data pipelines, and research software.
Profile
- Strong academic performance with motivation to produce high-quality, policy-relevant research.
- A Master’s degree in Economics, Econometrics, Data Science, Statistics, or a related quantitative field (or expected by the time of appointment).
- Solid knowledge of and interest in economics and economic policy issues.
- Excellent quantitative and programming skills, particularly in time series econometrics and forecasting methods.
- Experience or strong interest in working with large and/or real-time datasets, as well as forecasting evaluation.
- Excellent verbal, written, and visual communication skills.
- Ability to collaborate effectively and possess a compelling writing style in both German and English.
- Good command of German is mandatory; knowledge of French or Italian is an asset.
