PhD Student in Fundamental Muon Physics / PhD Student in Fundamental Muon Physics

Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI) - June 12, 2026

Your Tasks

The muon electric dipole moment experiment, muEDM at PSI, is searching for a signal of CP-violation beyond the Standard Model. Together with an international collaboration, you will:

  • Take initial data on storage, spin precession, and frozen-spin state of muons.
  • Participate in data analysis and focus on specific aspects related to the magnetic field of the storage trap.
  • Further characterize the magnetic field of the storage trap using dedicated sensors and particle detectors.
  • Contribute to a better understanding of systematic effects and enhance experimental sensitivity.

Your Profile

  • Master's degree in physics with a strong interest in low-energy particle physics.
  • Knowledge of computational numerical methods, such as Monte Carlo simulations, Python for data analysis, finite element methods, etc.
  • Practical experience in experimental techniques is appreciated (e.g., electronics, detectors, DAQ).
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Proficient level of English as the working language in both spoken and written forms is mandatory.
  • Knowledge of German or a willingness to learn German quickly is a plus.

We Offer

Our institution is founded on interdisciplinary, innovative, and dynamic collaboration. You will benefit from systematic on-the-job training, as well as personal development opportunities and a strong vocational training culture. If you wish to effectively balance work with family life or other personal interests, we provide modern working conditions and excellent on-site infrastructure to support you.
