PhD Student in Electrochemical Degradation of Water Pollutants / PhD Studentess in Electrochemical Degradation of Water Pollutants

Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI) - April 11, 2026

Your Tasks

Your work will focus on investigating the mechanisms of the electrochemical oxidation process (EOP) for the removal of emerging contaminants in water via the generation of hydroxyl radicals.

  • Reaction intermediates and products will be analyzed using a range of analytical chemistry techniques.
  • Advanced characterization methods, including synchrotron-based techniques, will be employed to investigate materials under operating conditions and establish design principles for next-generation EOP electrocatalysts.
  • During your PhD, you will closely interact with colleagues within the electrochemistry department, the Swiss Light Source, and international collaborators.

Your Profile

  • Completed Master’s degree in physical chemistry, chemical physics, chemistry, materials science, or a closely related discipline, with interest or experience in electrochemistry and spectroscopy techniques.
  • You have an active interest in experimental work and take the initiative for new solutions, demonstrating the ability to work independently in a collaborative and interdisciplinary research team.
  • Good communication and writing skills in English are required.

We Offer

Our institution is based on interdisciplinary, innovative, and dynamic collaboration. You will benefit from systematic on-the-job training, alongside opportunities for personal development and a strong vocational training culture. If you wish to optimally balance work with family life or other personal interests, we are equipped to support you with modern employment conditions and on-site infrastructure.

You will be registered as a PhD student at ETH Zürich under the supervision of Prof. T. J. Schmidt.
