PhD Position in Digital Humanities at the University of Bern

The Bit Philology project at the Digital Humanities unit, University of Bern, is pleased to announce a fully funded PhD position in the field of digital humanities. The position is set to commence in September 2025 and will span a duration of four years, with funding provided by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF).

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will work on their dissertation and engage in various project activities, which include:

  • Collaborating with the project team.
  • Working in archives.
  • Utilizing a set of OWL ontologies.
  • Creating RDF datasets.
  • Publishing and presenting research outcomes both locally and internationally.
  • Contributing to the organization of scholarly events and the project's communication strategy.

Please note that participation in teaching activities is optional.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess a Master's degree in digital humanities, library and information science, textual criticism, or literary studies, to be completed by July 2025 at the latest. Additionally, candidates should have:

  • Prior experience or a strong interest in born-digital archival records.
  • Knowledge of Semantic Web technologies.
  • A background in data mining and machine learning.

The candidate must demonstrate a strong motivation to work both independently and collaboratively in a diverse, interdisciplinary environment. Self-discipline, creative thinking, and proficiency in English and French are essential.
