PhD Student in Control & Dynamical Systems / PhD Student in Control & Dynamical Systems

ETH Zurich - February 16, 2025

PhD Student in Control & Dynamical Systems

100%, Zurich, fixed-term

The Frazzoli group at the Institute for Dynamic Systems and Control (IDSC), Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering (D-MAVT), is seeking a dedicated Ph.D. student specializing in control & dynamical systems with a focus on mobility applications.

Project Background

The successful candidate will engage in the Efficient Safe Train Dynamics (ESTRA) project, in collaboration with Prof. Corman and the Institute for Transport Planning and Systems. This innovative project examines the mathematical, physical, technical, and organizational factors essential for advancing automation in railway operations.

A key challenge involves the variability and imprecision of train dynamics data, especially regarding freight trains with differing lengths, weights, and wagon conditions, frequently transporting partially unknown loads. This uncertainty leads to conservative estimates of braking rates and dynamic performance, hindering efficiency at both the individual train and network levels and limiting automation's potential benefits.

To tackle this challenge, the project employs advanced data sources (such as high-resolution position sensors, accelerometers, and force and power sensors) to create an accurate, stochastic multibody simulation model. This model will dynamically update critical parameters to predict braking and acceleration capabilities, supplementing existing organizational and safety practices.

Furthermore, the project introduces a novel control regime to optimize train trajectories, facilitating faster speeds, later braking, and closer spacing while ensuring safety margins based on model accuracy. Performance outcomes will be evaluated against human-operated systems through simulations and real-world testing.
