PhD Position in Thermal Energy Storage

100%, Zurich, fixed-term

Prof. Dr. Kent Warren, head of the Solar Energy Engineering Laboratory within the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering at ETH Zürich, invites applications for a fully funded, full-time PhD position. This research opportunity focuses on developing novel, energy-dense materials for the asynchronous storage and dispatch of high-quality heat. The position is expected to start on or around 1 August 2025, or at the earliest convenience of the successful candidate.

Job Description

The Solar Energy Engineering Laboratory is dedicated to accelerating the deployment of renewable energy through the development of cost-effective technologies that convert sunlight into a storable and usable form. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in this mission by utilizing the fundamentals of thermodynamics, heat and mass transfer, and experimental design to create materials and scalable fabrication methods that outperform conventional thermal energy storage media. These materials must demonstrate robust thermal and mechanical stability at temperatures exceeding 1000°C.

The candidate will evaluate various aspects of the fabricated materials and their overall performance through experimental methods, using custom-built equipment and advanced thermophysical characterization techniques, including:

  • Thermogravimetry
  • Differential scanning calorimetry
  • Laser flash analysis

In addition to conducting original research, the successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Writing and publishing research findings in leading scientific journals
  • Presenting at international conferences
  • Supporting team members in various scholarly activities
  • Mentoring Master's and Bachelor's students
