PhD Position in Peptide-Based Drug Discovery (Industry Collaboration, w/m/d)

100%, Zurich, fixed-term

The Research Group for Peptide-Based Drug Discovery (Prof. Nathalie M. Grob) at ETH Zurich, in collaboration with Novo Nordisk in Copenhagen, Denmark, is seeking an exceptional and highly motivated PhD candidate for a joint project. This full-time (100%) PhD position is aimed at individuals with a strong interest in peptide chemistry, mass spectrometry, and modern drug discovery to establish an innovative platform for peptide drug discovery.

Project Background

Peptides are privileged modalities in the development of new therapeutic avenues. To address unexploited targets and provide alternative therapeutic strategies for established disease pathways, the discovery of bioactive peptides is a fundamental challenge. This project emphasizes the development of novel technologies for hit identification and validation with the goal of achieving high experimental throughput and success rates.

Job Description

The four-year project is co-funded by Novo Nordisk and will be supervised by Prof. Nathalie Grob (ETH Zurich) in cooperation with Novo Nordisk. This role presents a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of academia and industry, utilizing cutting-edge technology to make a meaningful impact in peptide drug discovery. Short research visits (up to 3 months) at the Novo Nordisk research site in Copenhagen and access to high-throughput instrumentation are planned throughout the project. Candidates with prior experience in peptide synthesis, mammalian tissue culture, and mass spectrometry will find a significant advantage.

To contribute effectively to this project, candidates should be prepared to integrate into a multidisciplinary team, balancing independent work with collaborative discussions. Responsibilities will include:

  • Chemical synthesis of peptides
  • Experimental development of a drug discovery technology
  • Biophysical and cellular evaluation of bioactivity

Profile

The ideal candidate will possess a recently completed MSc degree or equivalent in Chemistry, Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chemical Biology, Cellular Biology, or related fields. Candidates should also have experience in several of the following areas:

  • Peptide synthesis
  • Mammalian cell culture
  • Protein biochemistry
  • Mass spectrometry
  • Bioinformatics and programming

A successful applicant will demonstrate a passion for science and collaboration, accompanied by strong motivation and a deep interest in drug discovery and development. Proficiency in English is required to thrive in a multidisciplinary environment.

Applicants should be ready to start the project by October 1, 2025, and must have authorization to work in Switzerland and to travel to Denmark for short-term projects (under 3 months) without requiring additional permits.
