PhD Position in Environmental Microbiology

100%, Zurich, fixed-term

The Environmental Microbiology group, led by Prof. Marie Schölmerich at the Department of Environmental Systems Science, ETH Zurich, invites applications for a fully funded PhD position.

Our group explores the fascinating world of anaerobic microbiology—from the global to the microscopic scale. We focus on microorganisms that utilize ancient metabolic pathways to convert greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and methane. Employing methodologies from metagenomics, classical microbiology, and biochemistry, we study their impact on biogeochemical cycles and seek to identify the molecular mechanisms driving these processes. Our long-term objective is to understand fundamental principles of environmental processes and inspire sustainable technologies.

Job Description

The PhD candidate will conduct research on re-wetted peatlands, characterizing changes in microbial communities alongside their underlying molecular mechanisms. The project encompasses fieldwork, metagenomic and metatranscriptomic analyses, microcosm experiments, and isolation experiments.
