PhD Position in Data-Driven Nonlinear Model Reduction

100%, Zurich, fixed-term

The Chair in Nonlinear Dynamics at ETH Zürich is seeking a highly motivated PhD student specializing in data-driven model reduction for high-dimensional nonlinear physical problems. The successful candidate will focus on applying and extending data-driven nonlinear model reduction based on the recent theory of spectral submanifolds (SSMS). SSM-reduction is a dynamical systems-based alternative to data-driven system modeling via neural networks, providing explicit and predictive polynomial ordinary differential equation (ODE) models for the observed dominant dynamics of nonlinear systems. A non-technical introduction can be found here, while a more technical introduction is available here.

Job Description

The objective of this position is to collaborate with a Swiss-French consortium of academic institutions to address challenging model reduction problems using SSM-reduction. This will involve comparing this approach with other model reduction methods, such as dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) and neural network-based methods. The targeted problems will require further mathematical and algorithmic developments beyond the current state of data-driven SSM reduction. This PhD position will be based either within the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering or the Department of Mathematics at ETH Zurich, depending on the candidate's background and preferences.

Profile

The ideal candidate should possess a Master's degree in mechanical engineering, applied mathematics, or physics. A strong foundation in analysis and linear algebra is necessary, as evidenced by strong undergraduate and Master's level grades in these subjects. Experience with large-scale computations and data handling is required, with some background in nonlinear dynamical systems also expected. Excellent communication skills in English, both oral and written, are essential, along with a willingness to work collaboratively in an international team environment.
