PhD Position: Computer Simulation of Knee Arthroplasty

100%, Zurich, fixed-term

One doctoral position is available at the Institute for Biomechanics (Department of Health Sciences and Technology). The Institute for Biomechanics is a multidisciplinary research unit dedicated to the biomechanical investigation of the human body. We explore the mechanics and material properties of the musculoskeletal system, as well as movement control, from both macroscopic (body/organ) and microscopic (cell) scales.

The position is available from May 1, 2026, although a later starting date could be considered. It is funded for four years.

Project Background

This position is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. This collaborative project, involving EPF Lausanne, the University of Lausanne, and ETH Zurich, aims to enhance joint arthroplasty performance through innovative materials and targeted design approaches, using the knee as a case study. You will cultivate interdisciplinary skills essential for addressing one of the most pressing challenges in healthcare within both industry and academia.

Job Description

You will conduct independent research aimed at developing and applying advanced, patient-specific models of the knee joint for design iteration and optimization.

Specific Duties:

  • Develop and apply a finite element model of a knee arthroplasty and surrounding natural tissues.
  • Utilize patient-specific boundary conditions from musculoskeletal simulations performed by a collaborating post-doc in the institute.
  • Conduct parametric variations of the design to evaluate the influence of geometry and material specifications on implant and peri-implant stresses and strains.
  • Define and supervise BSc and MSc projects for biomedical engineering students within the research framework at ETH Zurich.
  • Disseminate research findings through peer-reviewed journal articles and presentations at international conferences.

Profile

Essential Experience, Skills, and Characteristics:

  • A master's degree in biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated substantial experience with computational simulation methods, particularly finite element analysis.
  • Proficiency in English.
  • Strong teamwork and communication abilities.
  • Capability to work independently, displaying flexibility, humor, and critical thinking.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Experience with medical image analysis.
  • Familiarity with biomaterials, tissue mechanics, or additive manufacturing methods.
  • Proficiency in German.
  • Peer-reviewed scientific publications.

Workplace

We Offer:

  • Your role will have a significant impact as part of ETH Zurich, which actively supports your professional growth while contributing to societal advancement.
• Numerous benefits, including public transport season tickets, car-sharing options, access to diverse sports activities offered by the ASVZ, childcare resources, and attractive pension benefits.
