100%, Basel, fixed-term
The Bio Engineering Laboratory at the Department of Biosystems of ETH Zurich in Basel is excited to announce a PhD position focusing on the Engineering of Microfluidic In-vitro Barrier Models for Bacterial Lung and Bladder Infections. We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic PhD student to join our international team in Basel, Switzerland.
This role is part of the National Competence Center of Research (NCCR) - Antiresist, which brings together clinicians, academic, and industrial research partners from various disciplines. Currently, we are developing a microfluidic platform aimed at studying bacterial lung and bladder infections, as well as testing new antibacterial drugs. This innovative platform includes a microfluidic system for culturing advanced in-vitro lung and bladder barrier models (membrane-based organ-on-chip models) and for exposing these models to bacteria and potential drug compounds. Across various analysis methods, such as fluorescence microscopy, mass spectrometry, TEER, and permeability assays, we continuously monitor barrier-layer status and viability.
The candidate will enhance a microfluidic platform designed for culturing transwell-based lung and bladder organoid models in collaboration with infection biologists from the Biozentrum (University of Basel). Key objectives include:
For this highly interdisciplinary project, a suitable candidate should possess:
Experience with transwell-based barrier models and biology is a strong advantage. Basic knowledge of microbiological techniques, including bacterial cultures, sterile handling, and infection assays, is highly appreciated. Strong communication skills, a proactive work ethic, the ability to collaborate across disciplines, and fluency in English (both oral and written) are essential attributes.
A state-of-the-art cleanroom, along with an extensive range of engineering and testing equipment, cell-culture, and biological facilities, will be available to the candidate. Our research partners in the AntiResist consortium offer valuable expertise in lung and bladder systems, as well as a broad spectrum of bacterial pathogens. They also provide specialized cell culture and biosafety facilities.
The position is planned for a duration of four years.
