PhD in Meta-optics based Optomechanics

100%, Zurich, Fixed-term

We are seeking a curious and motivated PhD student to join our optomechanics team and work at the interface between meta-optics and optomechanics.

Recent advances in meta-optics have led to an enhanced control over light-matter interaction, significantly contributing to diverse research areas including imaging, nonlinear optics, biosensing, and photonic computing. While less explored, meta-optics presents tremendous opportunities in the field of optomechanics, which focuses on the interactions of optical and mechanical properties, with applications relevant to both fundamental physics and technology.

Project Background

The project aims to exploit the latest developments in meta-optics to gain greater control over optomechanical interactions. Through precise engineering of the electromagnetic modes supported by the metasurfaces, we can manipulate the optical forces they experience, thereby influencing their mechanical response. By investigating unprecedented effects, this research promises to advance our fundamental understanding and inspire new technological innovations.

Job Description

Your work will encompass all steps from the idealization of the system to its comprehensive characterization, including:

  • The design of optomechanical metasurfaces using numerical simulations
  • Their nanofabrication in a clean room environment
  • The characterization of their optomechanical properties

Profile

  • The ideal candidate shares our passion for cutting-edge research, brings motivation and creativity, communicates clearly, enjoys working collaboratively and respectfully within a team, and possesses basic experience in laboratories and data analysis.
  • Prior experience in nanofabrication, nano- and meta-optics, optomechanics, vacuum technology, and programming for experiment control is highly valued but not mandatory.

Workplace

You will be part of an international and interdisciplinary research group at ETH Zurich that has made pioneering contributions to optomechanics. During your PhD, you will gain exposure to various technologies, including nanofabrication, optics, lasers, data analysis, vacuum technology, and numerical simulations.
