PhD Position: Computational Modeling of Neuromodulation for Electroceutical Applications and Neuroprosthetics

Workplace: Zurich, Switzerland
Company: IT'IS Foundation for Research on Information Technologies in Society, ETH Zurich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology)

Description

The Computational Life Sciences (CLS) group at IT’IS is dedicated to the simulation-based assessment of interactions between physical exposure, such as electromagnetic (EM) fields, and the physiology of living tissues. We co-developed the leading CLS platform, Sim4Life, which serves as a foundation for our research.

Our major research focus is analyzing the interactions between EM exposure and neural activity, with applications spanning low-frequency exposure safety, neuroprosthetics, electroceuticals, and various therapeutic fields. To achieve our objectives, we develop and employ electrophysiologically functionalized, detailed anatomical models aimed at gaining mechanistic insights, optimizing and personalizing devices and treatments, and discovering novel therapeutic approaches. Our research is conducted in collaboration with prestigious experimental groups, prominent device manufacturers, and regulatory bodies on an international scale.

We are currently seeking candidates who are passionate about developing simulation technologies and engaging in theoretical and applied modelling studies. Additional areas of interest include uncertainty assessment, validation, optimization, and image-based modelling.

Position Overview

The PhD candidate will join a highly motivated and dynamic team, conducting independent and original research on the development of simulation technologies, software tools, and platforms for neurostimulation.

Education

We are looking for a creative, talented, and ambitious candidate with a strong interest in the computational life sciences (CLS). The ideal applicant will possess a university degree (diploma or master’s) in life sciences, natural sciences (biophysics, physics, mathematics), medical physics, or biomedical engineering. Key qualifications include:

  • Solid scientific programming skills (Python, C++, etc.)
  • Competence in computational neuroscience
  • Familiarity with NEURON (Yale) is advantageous
  • Excellent organizational skills, high motivation, and flexibility
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with external partners
