PhD Candidate in Toxicology / PhD Candidate in Toxicology

ETH Zurich - July 3, 2026

PhD Position in Toxicology

100%, Zurich, fixed-term

We are seeking a motivated PhD student to join our team, with a start date in late 2026 or early 2027.

The Laboratory of Toxicology at ETH Zurich, within the Department of Health Sciences and Technology, is looking for a new PhD student focusing on genomic biomarkers of health and disease. Our mission is to understand the biochemical and cellular mechanisms governing the bioactive properties of chemicals to enhance the safety and functionality of food, drugs, and personal care products. Our researchers employ quantitative chemical, in vitro, and computational approaches to address challenges in toxicology.

Project Background

We develop and apply bioanalytical approaches to map DNA damage at single-base resolution. Building on these innovative tools, we integrate complementary multi-omic approaches to characterize DNA damage in relation to genome organization and function. By applying these methods to clinically relevant biological materials, we aim to mechanistically dissect the role of DNA damage in aging and disease.

Job Description

A PhD position is available focusing on UV-induced skin aging and the development of biomarker technologies for prevention. The group investigates mechanisms of genome instability due to various physical and chemical exposures, including environmental factors, lifestyle choices, and medications, alongside cellular metabolism and oxidative stress. In this PhD project, you will expand this research to identify biomarkers of aging driven by DNA damage. You will utilize DNA sequencing and related methodologies to characterize cellular responses to stress and subsequent interventions. Additionally, you will employ bioinformatics to integrate these data with characteristics such as gene expression and DNA methylation.

Profile

The ideal candidate will possess, or expect to obtain before starting, an MSc or equivalent in Chemistry, Chemical Biology, Toxicology, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Food Science, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, or a closely related discipline. Strong written and verbal communication skills in English are essential. The candidate should demonstrate independence, good leadership qualities, and a solid foundation of practical laboratory experience. While bioinformatics skills are advantageous, they can be developed further during the PhD. We particularly encourage applicants with expertise in the chemical biology of nucleic acids, genomic sequencing, in vitro toxicology, or related fields.
