Our research group is pioneering innovative methods for the control and confinement of electromagnetic waves by utilizing time as an active design dimension. Rather than solely relying on spatial structures for manipulating wave propagation, we have embarked on developing THz time-varying photonic systems based on subwavelength waveguides. Our approach incorporates ultrafast excitations that modify the optical properties of materials on subcycle timescales. This methodology enables groundbreaking wave phenomena such as time reflection, dynamic dispersion engineering, photonic time crystals, and the dynamic Casimir effect. The project is conducted in collaboration with renowned experts at ETH Zurich, allowing regular interaction with esteemed groups led by Prof. Dikopoltsev, Prof. Scalari, Prof. Johnson, and various project partners, thereby integrating theoretical modeling, device design, and ultrafast THz experiments.
The focus of this project is to merge advanced numerical modeling with experimental demonstrations to explore electromagnetic wave propagation in time-varying THz waveguides.
