100%, Basel, fixed-term
The Bio Engineering Laboratory at the Department of Biosystems of ETH Zurich in Basel is inviting applications for a PhD position in Engineering of Microfluidic in-vitro Barrier Models for Bacterial Lung and Bladder Infections. We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic PhD student who will work in a dynamic international environment in Basel, Switzerland. In the context of the large National Competence Center of Research (NCCR) - Antiresist, we are developing a microfluidic platform to study bacterial lung and bladder infections as well as test new antibacterial drugs. This platform encompasses a microfluidic system that facilitates the culturing of advanced in-vitro lung and bladder barrier models (membrane-based organ-on-chip models) and exposes these models to bacteria and potential drug compounds. We employ a variety of analytical methods, including fluorescence microscopy, mass spectrometry, TEER, and permeability assays, to continuously monitor barrier-layer status and viability.
The selected candidate will play a vital role in further developing a microfluidic platform designed for culturing transwell-based lung and bladder organoid models in close collaboration with infection biologists from the Biozentrum (University of Basel). The platform will specifically focus on:
A key objective is to optimize the platform for translational applications that can be used in clinical and industrial settings.
For this highly interdisciplinary project, a suitable candidate should possess:
Experience with transwell-based barrier models and related biology is a strong advantage. Additionally, basic knowledge of microbiological techniques, including bacterial cultures, sterile handling, and infection assays, is highly appreciated. Strong communication skills, a proactive work attitude, the ability to work collaboratively across disciplines, and fluency in English (oral and written) are important assets.
A state-of-the-art cleanroom, a broad spectrum of engineering and testing equipment, as well as cell culture and biological facilities are available within the group. Research partners within the AntiResist consortium contribute extensive expertise in lung and bladder systems, as well as a broad range of bacterial pathogens, and provide specific cell culture and biosafety facilities. The position is planned for 4 years.
