PhD Position: Examining the Thresholds in Past Atlantic Ocean Circulation Using Stalagmite Geochemistry

Location: Zurich, 100%, fixed-term

If you are intrigued by the study of past climate, enjoy hands-on laboratory work, and are passionate about generating new geochemical data, this PhD project may be the perfect fit for you. The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is a vital component of global heat transport that significantly influences climate patterns in Europe and worldwide. Over the last several hundred thousand years, AMOC has weakened abruptly numerous times and has shown remarkable recovery within centuries to millennia. This PhD position aims to advance our understanding of the causes behind these abrupt weakenings and the factors facilitating AMOC's restoration.

In this project, you will generate new geochemical records from stalagmites that formed in coastal caves. Your research will focus on reconstructing the timing of changes in North Atlantic salinity in relation to AMOC variations, which will be interpreted using process models and tracer experiments in atmosphere-ocean general circulation models.

Job Description

  • As a PhD student, you will design, produce, and analyze new research data.
  • You will present your findings to fellow scientists at workshops and conferences and prepare your research for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Collaboration with a research team at ETH and other institutions will be a key part of your role.
  • This position will involve international travel for research stays focused on U/Th dating of stalagmites and training in model-data comparisons.
  • You will enhance your skills by taking required courses (12KP) in both disciplinary and transversal skills.
  • All PhD students are expected to dedicate up to 10% of their employment time to departmental service, typically through contributions to teaching activities, allowing for professional growth in communication and management skills.

Profile

  • You possess a Master's Degree relevant to paleoclimate studies (e.g., Earth Science, Physics, or Geography focusing on Atmosphere and Climate).
  • You have prior coursework in paleoclimate research.
  • You have experience in geochemistry laboratory analysis, specifically producing isotopic or trace element data.
  • You demonstrate strong quantitative skills and comfort with coding, alongside good analytical thinking.
  • You are eager to work in an interdisciplinary team that integrates climate modeling, geochemical process models, and novel geochemical data.
  • You have well-developed writing skills and a commitment to academic growth.

Workplace

This PhD project offers the chance to receive comprehensive training in leading geochemistry laboratories, develop and work with process models, and engage with results from climate general circulation models as part of an international team pioneering new methodologies. ETH provides access to exceptional analytical resources supported by expert technical assistance. Regular co-writing sessions and writing retreats will aid in navigating the complexities of original scientific writing.
