100%, Zurich, fixed-term
The Laboratory of Energy Science and Engineering is seeking a candidate to fill a PhD position focused on the development of catalysts for the conversion of CO2 into higher alcohols. At LESE, we strive to enhance materials and processes that tackle the critical challenge of producing fuels, electricity, and chemicals in a sustainable and efficient manner. Our research prominently emphasizes the development of materials that facilitate closing the CO2 cycle, ultimately aiding societies in achieving net zero emissions. This PhD position is funded by the National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR Catalysis).
This project uniquely integrates high-throughput experimentation, model catalyst synthesis, operando characterization, and molecular modeling to discover novel catalyst families and develop structure-performance relationships for the hydrogenation of CO2 to higher alcohols, such as ethanol. The selected PhD candidate will focus on the development of model catalysts, utilizing X-ray absorption spectroscopy, X-ray total scattering, and infrared spectroscopy for operando characterization to identify catalytically active sites and motifs.
Applicants for this PhD position should possess an excellent MSc degree in Chemical Engineering, Material Science, or Chemistry. Experience and knowledge in material synthesis and/or (structural) material characterization are highly valued. We seek highly motivated, committed, and creative individuals capable of teamwork and possessing outstanding communication skills. Working in a premier research environment equipped with advanced laboratory infrastructure, the candidate will have a remarkable opportunity to enhance their research capabilities. The position is available starting January 2026.
The candidate will be situated in a collaborative and innovative work environment at ETH Zurich, a leading institution in science and technology.
