PhD Position in Numerical Modelling of Debris Flows

100%, Zurich, fixed-term

The Chair of Engineering Geology, led by Prof. Dr. Jordan Aaron at the Geological Institute, is seeking a creative and motivated PhD candidate with a deep interest in fluid mechanics and numerical modelling. The position is expected to commence in September 2026 and is fully funded for a duration of four years.

Job Description

  • Develop a new coupled solid/fluid mechanics-based numerical model to simulate the motion of debris flows.
  • Incorporate novel field data currently being collected at various locations worldwide to validate the new numerical model.
  • Combine numerical model results with field data to enhance our understanding of the motion of debris flows.

Profile

  • MSc in Fluid Mechanics, Hydraulics, Engineering Geology, Geological Engineering, Geophysics or related fields.
  • Strong background in numerical modelling.
  • Interest in natural hazards.
  • Motivation, creativity, independence, and the ability to work effectively in a team.
  • Excellent English communication skills.
