PhD Position in Human-Computer Interaction and Extended Reality in Architectural Design and Fabrication
100%, Zurich, fixed-term
Human-Computer Interaction in Architecture and Digital Fabrication
This fully funded, full-time PhD position is designed for a duration of four years and is integrated within the interdisciplinary research environment at the Professorship of Architecture and Human Augmentation at ETH Zürich. We are seeking a highly self-driven and motivated researcher who is committed to rigorous and applied research within an interdisciplinary academic setting. The focus of the research is on human-computer interaction (HCI) in architectural design and fabrication, particularly in the realms of extended reality (XR), machine vision, and human-robot collaboration.
Project Background
The research explores how interactive computational tools, extended reality (XR), and robotic systems can enhance human agency in architectural production. It delves into the roles of interfaces, feedback systems, and embodied interaction in connecting design intent, material behavior, and robotic execution throughout the design-to-fabrication workflows. Specific research streams include:
- Developing tools and workflows to efficiently assess discarded materials
- Creating a digital inventory of reclaimed components
- Developing computational representations of assembly and disassembly processes
- Establishing a robust pipeline linking this inventory to CAD models
Job Description
As a PhD candidate, you will carry out original research, design and execute studies, develop and assess prototypes, analyze data, and disseminate findings through publications and presentations. You will work closely with a team of researchers and partners, actively contribute to the lab environment, and provide support for teaching and student supervision. Responsibilities include:
- Conducting independent research within the project scope
- Performing literature reviews and keeping abreast of related work
- Designing and conducting experiments/case studies
- Documenting research comprehensively (version control, lab notebooks, protocols, datasets)
- Collecting, cleaning, and analyzing data using appropriate methods (e.g. qualitative coding, statistics, simulation, ML)
- Publishing results in peer-reviewed venues (conferences/journals) and contributing to paper writing
- Supporting lab operations as needed (maintaining equipment, onboarding, shared infrastructure)
Teaching
- Assisting with teaching activities (TA, tutorials, crit sessions) and supervising student projects
- Mentoring junior students (Bachelor/Master) and contributing to studio/course activities
Software/Engineering
- Implementing research code and maintaining repositories (testing, documentation, reproducibility)
Grants/Reporting
- Contributing to grant writing, progress reports, and project administration
Profile
- You hold an architectural or advanced technical degree equivalent to FHEQ Level 7
- You have a strong interest in programming and, ideally, experience with Python and C# coding languages
- You are proficient in 3D modeling environments and XR software; familiarity with Rhinoceros, Grasshopper, and Unity is advantageous
- Experience in robotic fabrication, digital fabrication, or human-robot interaction is highly desirable
- Familiarity with XR technologies, UX development, or experimental prototyping is an asset
- You are fluent in English (written and spoken)
