100%, Zurich, fixed-term
A doctoral student is sought for a research project at the Institute of Environmental Engineering (IFU), Chair Earth Observation at ETH Zürich, focusing on Snow and ice parameter estimation using high frequency multi-modal SAR.
The research will target the retrieval of snow and ice parameters and their dynamics utilizing multimodal Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) observations. The primary focus encompasses two significant scientific topics within the cryosphere domain.
For the first topic, the methodology is well-established; however, there remains potential to expand the analysis into new regions and timeframes to investigate dynamic changes. Conversely, the application of SAR for identifying and characterizing crevasses has seen limited exploration, highlighting the need for developing new methods. This approach will leverage high-resolution data (e.g., airborne acquisitions) and explore various imaging modes, including polarimetry, interferometry, and tomography.
Numerous snow and glacier test sites are globally available for these topics, providing valuable ground validation measurements and serving as reference data for satellite observations. All research topics will be evaluated concerning upcoming mission proposals and existing missions, with the collaboration of a multidisciplinary and international team.
We are seeking a highly motivated candidate with a master's degree or a diploma in electrical engineering, geomatics engineering, geophysics, computational science, mathematics, physics, or a related field. The ideal candidate will possess strong analytical skills and programming experience in either Python, C/C++, or equivalent languages. Prior experience in snow/ice modeling, field work, and handling large datasets will be advantageous for this project. Fluency in English (oral and written) is required, along with a willingness to work in a multidisciplinary and international research team. A valid driver’s license (European Cat. B) is also essential.
Join an attractive research environment within a young, highly motivated, and international team at ETH Zurich.
