The Computational Mechanics Group in the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering at ETH Zurich is seeking a dedicated doctoral student.

Project Background

This position is associated with a project focused on phase-field modeling of fracture. The PhD project aims to develop cutting-edge models for the fracture behavior of quasi-brittle materials, relevant for real applications of interest to an industrial partner that will provide experimental data. The PhD student will work within a novel theoretical and computational framework for phase-field fracture, recently proposed by other members of the Computational Mechanics Group, and will further develop it from both theoretical and computational perspectives.

Profile

• Recently obtained master's degree in engineering, physics, or applied mathematics with outstanding grades.
• Excellent knowledge of continuum mechanics and finite element analysis.
• Strong coding skills.
• Knowledge and experience with fracture and/or phase-field modeling and/or FEniCS are a plus.
• A keen interest in computational mechanics and scientific methods and research in general.
