100%, Zurich, fixed-term
The PhD position is an integral part of an interdisciplinary research project that lies at the intersection of robotics and biomedical engineering. This project is conducted in close collaboration with neurosurgeons from the University Hospital Zurich, biomedical engineers and veterinarians from the University of Zurich, as well as international partners from Umeå University in Sweden and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the US.
Hydrocephalus is a significant and prevalent neurological disorder that manifests in various forms, affecting individuals from childhood to old age. Our research focuses primarily on normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) in elderly patients, impacting approximately 6% of people over the age of 80. This disorder is characterized by the enlargement of the brain ventricles, likely due to an imbalance in the secretion and resorption of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Patients typically exhibit symptoms such as cognitive impairment and gait disturbances. Conventional treatment often involves lifelong therapy using shunts to drain CSF from the brain ventricles to the abdomen, which are generally based on passive mechanical pressure valves.
To enhance the treatment experience for hydrocephalus patients, our team integrates in silico and in vitro studies with animal experiments. This research aims to deepen our quantitative understanding of the disorder and to innovate intelligent mechatronic shunt systems.
