PhD Candidate in Biomedical Robotics / PhD Candidate in Biomedical Robotics

ETH Zurich - June 16, 2025

PhD Position - Biomedical Robotics in Hydrocephalus Research

100%, Zurich, fixed-term

The PhD position is part of an interdisciplinary research project at the intersection of robotics and biomedical engineering. This initiative is conducted in collaboration with neurosurgeons from the University Hospital Zurich, biomedical engineers, and veterinarians from the University of Zurich, along with international partners from Umeå University in Sweden and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the United States.

Hydrocephalus is a severe and prevalent neurological disorder affecting individuals from childhood to old age. Our research primarily targets normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) in elderly patients, which impacts approximately 6% of those over 80. The disorder is characterized by the enlargement of brain ventricles, likely due to an imbalance in the secretion and resorption of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Patients typically show symptoms such as cognitive impairment and gait disturbances. Standard treatment involves lifelong therapy with shunts that drain CSF from the brain ventricles into the abdomen, often utilizing passive mechanical pressure valves.

To enhance the treatment for hydrocephalus patients, we integrate in silico and in vitro studies with animal experiments to deepen our understanding of the disorder and to develop advanced mechatronic shunt systems.

Job Description

The PhD position encompasses the following key objectives:

  • Developing mechatronic systems for in vivo applications, including NPH animal models and active shunts
  • Designing and implementing advanced algorithms for estimation and control
  • Conducting in vivo trials with sheep in partnership with veterinary and clinical colleagues
  • Performing signal analysis and data processing from acute and chronic in vivo trials
  • Deriving dynamical system models for CSF simulation studies and hardware-in-the-loop shunt testing

Profile

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A Master of Science degree from a recognized university (or nearing completion) in mechanical, electrical, robotics, control, or biomedical engineering
  • A passion for practical and methodological work, following a systematic and sound approach within a medical context
  • A strong interest in collaborating within a highly interdisciplinary environment
  • A background in hardware development, control theory, signal processing, and machine learning
  • Curiosity, open-mindedness, and effective communication skills
  • Proficient oral and written English skills
