The Bio Engineering Laboratory at the Department of Biosystems of ETH Zurich in Basel is inviting applications for a PhD position focused on the Engineering of Microfluidic In-Vitro Barrier Models for Bacterial Lung and Bladder Infections. We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic PhD student who will thrive in our international environment in Basel, Switzerland. This position is part of a large National Competence Center of Research (NCCR) - Antiresist, which involves collaboration among clinicians, academic researchers, and industry partners across multiple disciplines. The objective is to develop a microfluidic platform for studying bacterial lung and bladder infections and testing new antibacterial drugs. This platform includes a microfluidic system for culturing advanced in-vitro lung and bladder barrier models (membrane-based organ-on-chip models) and exposing these models to bacteria and potential drug candidates. A variety of analytical methods (fluorescence microscopy, mass spectrometry, TEER, permeability assays) will be utilized to analyze and monitor barrier-layer status and viability continuously.
The candidate will further develop a microfluidic platform designed for culturing transwell-based lung and bladder organoid models in close collaboration with infection biologists from the Biozentrum (University of Basel). The platform will be utilized to:
A key objective is to optimize the platform for translational applications that can be used in clinical and industrial settings.
For this highly interdisciplinary project, suitable candidates should possess:
Experience with transwell-based barrier models and biology is a strong advantage, along with a basic knowledge of microbiological techniques, including bacterial cultures, sterile handling, and infection assays. Strong communication skills, proactive work attitude, and the ability to collaborate across disciplines, as well as fluency in English (both oral and written), are essential assets.
A state-of-the-art cleanroom, a broad spectrum of engineering and testing equipment, and cell-culture and biological facilities are available in the group. Research partners within the AntiResist consortium bring extensive expertise in lung and bladder systems and a diverse range of bacterial pathogens. They also provide specific cell culture and biosafety facilities.
The position is planned for 4 years.
