Full time, onsite
At Novartis, we are reimagining medicine to enhance and extend people's lives. Through innovative science and technology, we tackle some of society's most pressing healthcare challenges. Our mission is to discover and develop groundbreaking treatments while finding new ways to deliver them globally. We believe that the answers to advancing our science and helping patients in need emerge when curious, bold, and collaborative individuals are empowered to ask new questions, make courageous decisions, and take intelligent risks.
In the Global Discovery Chemistry (GDC) department based in Basel, we are at the heart of Novartis' mission. We seek a highly motivated and independent scientist with extensive expertise in parallel purification and automation. The successful candidate will join our team of separation and analytical experts, bringing passion and experience in developing and implementing comprehensive and automated workflows for the purification of innovative modalities. You will play a crucial leadership role in providing tailored solutions, directly contributing to the discovery of new medicines!
About the Role
Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Develop, implement, and oversee innovative solutions and workflows to enhance parallel purification and analytics platforms that support a variety of chemical modalities, including peptides, oligonucleotides, and low molecular weight (LMW) compounds.
- Implement and maintain robust, scalable, high-throughput purification platforms for peptides and other modalities across varying scales, including the accompanying analytical processes.
- Refine and optimize existing library purification workflows. Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams and external partners to adapt equipment and processes to meet evolving needs.
- Work closely with cross-site and cross-functional partners to ensure seamless digital workflows, hardware configurations, and data integration. Drive standardization of data and enhance capabilities for active learning.
- Lead and mentor a team of seasoned scientists, fostering an environment where professional growth and scientific excellence thrive, enabling team members to deliver impactful results.
- Anticipate emerging trends and requirements in automation for purification and analytics. Drive proactive strategies by collaborating closely with chemists and project teams to facilitate leading-edge solutions aligned with GDC’s evolving objectives.
- Act as a subject matter expert, sharing expertise, introducing novel techniques, and encouraging creativity and resourcefulness. Contribute to shaping the group's strategic vision and future initiatives.
- Engage actively in global scientific communities through presentations, publications, and networking opportunities.
What You Will Bring to the Role
- A degree in Science or Engineering (PhD or Master's), with a minimum of 5 years of experience in automation and purification, preferably within a drug discovery environment.
- Advanced knowledge and recent hands-on experience in implementing automation solutions, including digital workflows (software/hardware) and troubleshooting hardware systems.
- Proficiency in current data workflow management and analysis software packages.
- Demonstrated expertise in peptide purification; experience with oligonucleotide and low molecular weight compound processing is highly desirable.
- Hands-on experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) for managing workflows, data tracking, and analytical reporting in a high-throughput environment.
- A successful history of coaching and leading a team of scientists, as well as establishing and driving cross-site and interdisciplinary collaborations.
- Proven ability to initiate and complete projects independently with strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Exceptional collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively within a matrixed organization and build consensus among diverse teams and stakeholders.
- Strong connections within external networks in the parallel purification and automation community are highly advantageous.
- Proficiency in English (written and spoken) is required.
