Role

As a Patent Scientist at SICPA, you will play a vital role in protecting and enhancing our intellectual property assets across a diverse range of technologies and business activities. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Collaborating with internal inventors and technology partners to identify and extract patentable inventions, preparing technical memos, and leading the preparation of patent applications or trade secrets.
  • Working closely with internal patent attorneys to ensure that the scope and value of inventions are effectively represented in patent applications.
  • Assisting the Legal IP team in filing and defending patent applications until patents are granted.
  • Addressing key strategic questions regarding the patent portfolio.
  • Collaborating with the Legal IP team, Research & Innovation teams, and Business Units to formulate strategies and responses to third-party observations, evaluate and mitigate third-party IP risks, conduct oppositions, and assess IP clearance and Freedom to Operate.
  • Driving patent watch and monitoring activities as part of a global and multi-disciplinary competitive intelligence effort.

Profile

We are looking for a candidate who meets the following qualifications:

  • PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science, or Physical Chemistry.
  • A minimum of 3-5 years’ experience in industry, preferably in R&D.
  • Fluency in French and English, with good reading and understanding of German.
  • Experience with intellectual property (IP) tasks and patent search tools is a plus.
  • A broad technical knowledge, curiosity, and openness to new ideas and technologies.
  • Strong analytical skills and high attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills to engage with a diverse range of stakeholders, including research scientists, engineers, technology partners (startups, corporates, academia), patent counsels, and business development managers.
  • Strong team spirit and eagerness to learn and contribute.
  • Exceptional organizational and planning skills, with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and projects under tight deadlines.
  • Capacity to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information.
  • Proficiency with standard IT tools such as MS Office.
