Position Overview
We are seeking a skilled Patent Officer to join our Global IP organization. In this role, you will report to the Group Head of IP, serving as a vital technical and IP specialist, focusing on the protection of Accelleron’s innovative technologies. Your expertise will allow you to assess invention disclosures, manage patent applications, identify strategic IP risks, and develop impactful patent strategies. As the primary expert contact for patent matters, you will collaborate closely with R&D leadership, project managers, and external counsels, exercising sound judgment to ensure robust IP protection across the business.
Your Responsibilities
- Patent Portfolio Management
- Evaluate invention disclosures and conduct prior art searches to support strategic decisions in the IP review team.
- Manage the company’s patent and design patent portfolio while guiding patent attorneys through prosecution processes.
- Prepare regular patent portfolio assessments for presentation to the IP review team.
- Collaborate with R&D and cross-functional teams, guiding them in developing strong IP protection strategies.
- Freedom to Operate (FTO)
- Coordinate FTO processes, including prior art searches and IP risk assessments.
- Provide expert IP guidance to project managers during new product development, ensuring early identification of risks.
- Improve FTO processes, incorporating AI solutions as needed.
- Third-Party Patent Monitoring
- Monitor relevant third-party patent applications and legal status changes.
- Conduct technical and IP assessments of potential conflicts, leading cases to successful resolutions.
- IP Processes & Tools
- Maintain and optimize IP management tools (e.g., Diams iQ).
- Train employees on patent-related processes and document reviews.
- Continuously enhance IP processes to improve efficiency and stakeholder value.
- Contractual & Enforcement Support
- Review IP clauses in contracts and agreements, along with General Terms and Conditions (GTCs).
- Assist in IPR enforcement and infringement cases as part of Accelleron’s enforcement board team.
- Collaboration
- Serve as the main contact for external law firms, coordinating with internal divisions on patent-related matters.
- Provide consulting support to inventors, project managers, and management teams.
- Work closely with IP Specialists in China on patent and IPR enforcement matters.
- Evaluate supplier requests for the use of Accelleron’s IPRs, ensuring brand integrity is maintained.
Your Background
- Strong technical background in mechanical engineering, ideally with expertise in turbocharging, internal combustion engines, and power generation systems.
- Experience as a patent officer or patent engineer is preferred, though a strong motivation for a career transition is welcomed.
- Proven structured working, planning, prioritization, and strategic skills.
- Ability to work independently with high accuracy and initiative.
- Strong interpersonal skills and effective communication (both written and verbal).
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, MS Teams, and SharePoint.
- Knowledge of AI opportunities that can enhance IP operational efficiency would be a plus.
- Business fluency in German and English is required.
Additional Qualities (Nice to Have)
- Familiarity with IP management tools (e.g., Diams iQ, Anaqua, Orbit).
- Understanding of patent law processes and enforcement strategies.
- Ability to effectively coordinate with global teams and external partners.
- Curiosity and a proactive approach can be advantageous for this role.
- Basic knowledge of trademark management and governance is considered a valuable asset.
