Your Role
In this pivotal position, you will report to the Group Head of IP and serve as a key technical and Intellectual Property (IP) specialist within Accelleron’s Global IP organization. You will independently drive the protection of Accelleron’s technologies, leveraging your deep engineering expertise to assess invention disclosures, patent applications, and patents, while identifying strategic IP risks and shaping impactful patent strategies.
As the primary expert contact for patent matters, you will collaborate closely with R&D leadership, project managers, and external counsels. Exercising sound judgment and autonomy, you will ensure robust and forward-looking IP protection across the business.
Your Responsibilities
- Patent Portfolio Management:
- Provide expert evaluations of invention disclosures to support strategic decision-making.
- Manage the company’s patent and design patent portfolio, guiding patent attorneys through prosecution processes.
- Prepare regular assessments of the patent portfolio for presentation to the IP review team.
- Collaborate with R&D and cross-functional teams to develop strong IP protection and defense strategies.
- Freedom to Operate (FTO):
- Coordinate FTO processes, including prior art searches and IP risk assessments.
- Provide IP guidance to project managers throughout new product development.
- Enhance the FTO process with innovative AI solutions.
- Third-Party Patent Monitoring:
- Assess and monitor relevant third-party patent applications and legal changes.
- Conduct technical and IP assessments of potential conflicts with experts and patent attorneys.
- IP Processes & Tools:
- Maintain IP management tools and optimize their setup as needed.
- Train employees in patent-related processes and document reviews.
- Continuously improve IP processes for increased efficiency and value.
- Contractual & Enforcement Support:
- Review IP clauses in contracts and agreements.
- Assist in IPR enforcement and infringement cases as a member of Accelleron’s enforcement board.
- Collaboration:
- Act as the main contact for external law firms, coordinating with internal divisions.
- Consult with inventors, project managers, and management teams.
- Collaborate closely with IP specialists in China regarding patent enforcement matters.
- Evaluate supplier requests for the use of Accelleron’s IPRs to maintain brand integrity.
Your Background
- Strong technical background in mechanical engineering, preferably with experience in turbocharging, turbomachinery, internal combustion engines, and power generation systems.
- Experience as a patent officer or patent engineer is preferred; however, a strong motivation to transition to this career is also welcome.
- Structured working approach with planning, prioritization, and strategic skills.
- Ability to work independently with accuracy and initiative.
- Strong interpersonal skills and effective communication, both written and verbal.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, MS Teams, and SharePoint.
- Interest in identifying AI opportunities to enhance IP operational efficiency.
- Business fluency in both German and English.
Nice to Have
- Familiarity with IP management tools like Diams iQ, Anaqua, or Orbit.
- Knowledge of patent law processes and enforcement strategies.
- Skills in coordinating with global teams and external partners.
- A curious mindset with detective skills.
- Basic understanding of trademark management and governance.
