ETH Zürich - June 8, 2025

FIRST-Center for Micro- and Nanoscience

FIRST is an interdepartmental cleanroom facility directly supported by ETH Zürich. This technology platform serves the scientific community at ETH Zürich. FIRST stands for Frontiers in Research: Space and Time, catering to a multidisciplinary spectrum of departments within ETH, as well as industry, by supporting their research and development in a broad range of micro- and nanotechnologies.

Throughout the history of science, groundbreaking discoveries have often occurred at the extremes: shorter time scales, lower temperatures, greater intensities, higher energies, smaller distances, and cleaner materials. The impact of technology on new scientific discoveries is well documented. To support this, FIRST-Lab provides a common technology and fabrication facility for research at these frontiers. As a university, it is our duty to remain at the technical forefront, which poses challenges in predicting breakthroughs and determining precise technological needs over the next decade. Hence, FIRST is designed with maximum flexibility to rapidly respond to the scientific demands of an evolving field, welcoming participation from newly established research groups. FIRST-Lab is driven by scientific motivation; technology serves as a tool for advancing science.
