FIRST - Center for Micro- and Nanoscience

FIRST is an interdepartmental cleanroom facility, directly supported by ETH Zürich, designed to serve the scientific community. Standing for Frontiers in Research: Space and Time, FIRST supports a multidisciplinary spectrum of departments within ETH as well as the industry, facilitating research and development across a broad range of micro- and nanotechnologies.

Throughout the history of science, groundbreaking discoveries have emerged from exploring the extremes—shorter time scales, lower temperatures, greater intensities, higher energies, smaller distances, and cleaner materials. The impact of technology on scientific advancement is well-documented. FIRST-Lab aims to provide a unified technology and fabrication facility for research within ETH at these frontiers. As a university at the forefront of technology, it is challenging to predict the next breakthroughs and determine precise technological needs over the next decade. Consequently, FIRST has been established with maximum flexibility, implementing an open concept that can swiftly respond to the scientific demands of a rapidly evolving field while welcoming participation from newly established research groups. The FIRST-Lab is motivated by scientific inquiry, where technology serves as a tool to advance research.
