Job Opportunity: Machine Learning Scientist

The Center for Climate Systems Modeling (C2SM) at ETH Zurich, in collaboration with the Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology (MeteoSwiss), is at the forefront of pioneering innovative methods that leverage machine learning for numerical weather forecasting and climate modeling.

We are seeking a motivated Machine Learning Scientist to join the WeatherGenerator project. Similar to the methodology employed in Large Language Models, the WeatherGenerator aims to create a foundation model for Weather and Climate. This model will be trained on a variety of data sources, including model data and numerous observational datasets ranging from satellite to radar data. The core model will then be fine-tuned for specific applications, such as high-resolution weather prediction over Switzerland.

Key Responsibilities

  • Further develop and train the WeatherGenerator model for specific applications in Switzerland, such as high-resolution regional weather predictions.
  • Enhance the system by integrating observational and high-resolution model data.
  • Fine-tune and validate the model against existing numerical models and observations.
  • Curate and validate machine learning training datasets.
  • Integrate the machine learning pipeline into production.

Qualifications

  • University degree (MSc or PhD) in data science, computer science, physics, or a related field.
  • Experience in training and validating large-scale deep-learning models on distributed systems.
  • Strong programming skills in Python and familiarity with a modern ML stack (e.g., PyTorch, Hydra, Zarr, Dask).
  • Experience in handling and processing large datasets or with high-performance computing (HPC) is an advantage.
  • Experience with weather and climate applications is also an advantage.
  • You are creative, solution-oriented, possess excellent communication skills, and have the ability to work collaboratively within interdisciplinary teams.
  • Good proficiency in spoken and written English.

What We Offer

  • Unique opportunities to develop state-of-the-art machine learning systems and influence the future of weather forecasting.
  • Join a dynamic team operating at the intersection of cutting-edge research and practical applications.
  • We are dedicated to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace and offer flexible working arrangements to support the work-life balance of all team members.
