Machine Learning Scientist / Machine Learning Scientistess

ETH Zürich - April 15, 2026

Job Opportunity: Machine Learning Scientist

The Center for Climate Systems Modeling (C2SM) at ETH Zurich, in collaboration with the Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology (MeteoSwiss), is at the forefront of developing innovative methods to harness machine learning for numerical weather forecasting and climate modeling.

We are seeking a motivated Machine Learning Scientist to join the WeatherGenerator project. Similar to the approach of Large Language Models, the WeatherGenerator aims to create a foundation model for Weather and Climate. This model will be trained on a diverse range of model data and observational datasets, including satellite and radar data. Subsequently, the core model will be fine-tuned for specific applications, such as high-resolution predictions over Switzerland.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and train the WeatherGenerator model for specific applications in Switzerland, such as high-resolution regional weather predictions.
  • Enhance the system by integrating observational data and high-resolution model outputs.
  • Fine-tune and validate the model against existing numerical models and observations.
  • Curate and validate ML training datasets.
  • Work on integrating the machine learning pipeline into production.

Qualifications

  • University degree (MSc or PhD) in data science, computer science, physics, or a related field.
  • Experience in training and validating large-scale deep-learning models on distributed systems.
  • Strong programming skills in Python and familiarity with modern ML stacks (e.g., PyTorch, hydra, zarr, dask).
  • Experience in handling and processing large datasets or in high-performance computing (HPC) is an advantage.
  • Experience with weather and climate applications is a plus.
  • You should be creative, solution-oriented, with excellent communication skills and the ability to work in interdisciplinary teams.
  • Good knowledge of spoken and written English.

What We Offer

  • Unique opportunities to develop state-of-the-art Machine Learning systems and influence the future of weather forecasting.
  • A dynamic team operating at the intersection of cutting-edge research and real-world applications.
  • A commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace, with flexible working arrangements to support work-life balance for all team members.

This position is limited to two years. Apply online using the form below. Only applications matching the job profile will be considered. Further information about C2SM can be found on our website.
